Leopoldo Lugones is a writer who opened the literature of Argentina to the Argentines themselves and the whole world. In 1938, responding to the death of Lugones, the famous Jorge Luis Borges, who always regarded Lugones, whom he called his mentor, with admiration, admitted: “To say that the first writer of our country has left us, that the first writer of our language has left us, means to tell the pure truth and at the same time say too little.” For Argentine literature, Lugones was a man of the era. His creativity is amazing in its diversity. Stories, biographical books, political articles, literary essays... He was the first in Latin America to create works of the fantastic genre. The genre that later, thanks to the stories of Borges and Cortazar, glorified Argentine literature. But the main thing in Lugones’s work is poetry. In terms of the significance of what he did for Latin American poetry in the first half of the 20th century, Leopoldo Lugones is second only to the brilliant Ruben Dario. Unfortunately, Lugones’s work is almost unknown in Russia. This collection is the first book by the great Argentinean published in Russian. It includes selected poems and stories that Lugones created throughout his forty years of literary activity. Most of the works presented in this book are published in Russian for the first time.
