9 Rules to Succeed in the Age of Artificial Intelligence and Automation.
The machines are here. Artificial intelligence has gone far beyond scientific laboratories and Silicon Valley. Algorithms influence everything, and while we debate whether automation will destroy jobs, a more important question remains: What does it mean to be human in a world increasingly shaped by machines, for machines?
Technology columnist New York Times Kevin Roose offers a pragmatic view of what humans need to do in the machine age to be indispensable. He shares the secrets of people and companies successfully coping with technological change, and explains what rules will help protect their future.
Who is this book for
For anyone interested in the future humanity and wants to remain relevant in the world of the future.
For those who are interested in the development of technology.
From the author
I have been fascinated by new technologies since childhood, when I I devoted my free time to website development and saved my pocket money for new computer components. And for years I rolled my eyes whenever someone said that computers would put people out of work, destabilize society, and plunge us into a dystopian world. I was especially dismissive of those who predicted that AI would one day make humans unnecessary. These are just alarmists, technophobes like those who predicted that Nintendo games would cause softening of the brain! And hasn’t time shown time after time that these fears are exaggerated?
Several years ago, When I started writing a technology column for The New York Times, most of what I learned about AI was consistent with my optimistic views. I met with startup founders and developers in Silicon Valley, and they showed me how advances in fields like deep learning were helping them create all sorts of tools that changed the world for the better: algorithms for increasing crop yields; programs to help hospitals operate more efficiently; self-driving cars that will take us back and forth while we doze off and watch Netflix.
It was a moment of euphoria, the peak of the hype around AI, a time when all the American IT giants - Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft - invested billions of dollars in the development of new intelligent products and strive to equip as many of their applications as possible with machine learning algorithms.
However, over the past few years, as I continued to write about AI and automation, I had to reconsider my optimistic views.
I hope that Once you finish reading this book, you will share my concerns about AI and automation and the economic, political, and social problems they may lead to in the future. But I also hope that you will feel more confident in the face of these problems. My main goal is to convince you that you can become someone who has nothing to worry about, someone whose truly human qualities make him irreplaceable despite all the skills and inabilities of AI.
