The author describes many interesting details: the first radio in the village, anti-religious processions, who is a flier, why do the Far Easterners need ishigi, what happened at the Vladivostok labor exchange, etc. The main character, Boris Aleshkin, enters working life after graduating from school: he works in the Gosstrakh office, serves as a machine gunner in the anti-hunhuz detachment, receives his first wound, masters the profession of a logging foreman and gets to work.
