The final part of the novel. The hospital, in accordance with orders, is being redeployed following the active units. Soviet people, finding themselves in Western Europe at the very end of the Great Patriotic War and coming into contact with different conditions, life, comfort, assortment of stores, through the mouth of one orderly, ask the inevitable question towards the enemy: “And what did they lack?” The main character and everyone around him finally meet the long-awaited Victory. But the return home took place only in December 1945. This was preceded by service in Poland and Germany, and then a long procedure for disbanding the front-line hospital. Saying goodbye to the reader, the author in the epilogue briefly describes the events of the life of his heroes until the mid-1980s.
