Before the reader is a touching, intelligent and psychologically accurate chronicle of a walk as a review of creative forces, achievements and failures of life, preceding the actual literary work. And this author’s reflection makes Walser’s short story similar to Stern and his “exposure of technique”; and the passionate and suspicious style, the ability to masterfully “get lost” in the side branches of the plot, straying into a long list of objects and associations, bring to mind the narrative style of Sasha Sokolov in his “School for Fools”. And Robert Walser himself is from somewhere there, even literally, judging by his biography and confessions: “In short, I earn my daily bread by thinking, reflecting, delving into, poring over, comprehending, composing, researching, studying and I walk, and this bread comes to me, like anyone else, through hard work.”
