The issue opens with the novel “The Young Ladies of Avignon” by the Spaniard Francisco Umbral (1932–2007). The novel takes place during the Belle Epoque and ends with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. This is a somewhat parodic family saga in the perception of a young man, almost a boy. At the author's whim, Unamuno, Picasso, Lorca and many other cultural and political celebrities become visitors to the house of a stupid aristocratic family. The novelist himself characterizes his artistic method as follows: “true and impossibly false memories.” So it is, if by truthfulness we mean a reliable recreation of the spirit of the times.
