Titus Flavius Clement, a Christian writer of the late 2nd - early 3rd centuries, before converting to Christianity, long sought the truth in Greek philosophy. He was initiated into the pagan mysteries, the knowledge of which was useful to him later, when, having already converted to Christianity and becoming the head of the catechetical school in Alexandria, he began to expose pagan cults. The works that form a kind of trilogy ("Admonition to the Pagans", "Teacher", "Stromata") were probably based on his lectures at the school. Readers are invited to the first of these works, in which the Christian author reveals the essence of pagan mysteries, proves the falsity of idolatry, calling pagan philosophers and poets as witnesses, and invites his listeners to become participants in genuine mysteries - to accept Christ. Clement is not afraid to talk about the darkest, obscene things that exist in paganism - about some rituals and the myths that underlie them, and about the brightest - the insights of pagan sages, in particular Plato, whom Clement takes as his assistant in seeking God. The translation of the Exhortation includes an extensive introduction, notes, an index of names, and a bibliography. A translation of “Which of the Rich Will Be Saved” by N.N. Korsunsky is included as an appendix.
