The outstanding French writer, our compatriot, Nathalie Sarraute (b. 1900) formulated her main goal in her 1950 essay “The Age of Suspicion”: “The reader immediately finds himself inside, in the same place as the author, at a depth where already not a single one of the convenient reference points with the help of which he once constructed the characters remains. He is immersed and will remain until the end immersed in a certain substance, anonymous, like blood, in magma, devoid of a name, devoid of contours" (translation by L. Zonina). The book by a classic of the “new novel,” an experimenter and a traditionalist, collects two of her works, published in France in 1995 and 1997.
