In the late 1970s, Pierre Guyotat began writing “The Stories of Samora Machel” - a gigantic novel about the fate of an Algerian slave, seducer and prophet who sells himself. Writing required an exorbitant concentration of will and gradually began to displace reality. Pierre Guyotat stopped eating and ate only compralgyl, an analgesic that at that time could be bought without a prescription. In December 1981, Pierre Guyotat fell into a coma: he descended into the abyss of self-destruction and was resurrected. “Coma” is a book about how the spirit eats the body.
