The book discusses the fate of Soviet historical science in the second half of the 20th century. The author appears here as a witness and active participant in the “battles for history” that led to the destruction of scientific schools. The book recreates the drama of ideas, which was also the drama of people. The history of Russian historical thought has not yet been written, and A. Ya. Gurevich’s book is almost the only living evidence of this history.
