At the beginning of February 2005, messages appeared that just a few months ago the second President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma, who ruled the country for ten years in a row, could have dreamed only in a nightmare. They wrote that in the near future he could be taken into custody - A number of people's deputies of the Verkhovna Rada insisted on this. At the same time, the General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine received parliamentary inquiries regarding the possibility of initiating a criminal case against Leonid Kuchma and taking the ex-president into custody. The former Ukrainian leader was suspected of organizing the kidnapping of opposition journalist Georgy Gongadze in 2000. The Prosecutor General of Ukraine Svyatoslav Piskun even reported on the possible summoning of Leonid Kuchma for questioning in this case, and some analysts did not rule out that the interrogation could result in an arrest (however, he came to the prosecutor’s office himself and was not arrested). Deputies also suspected the ex-president in illegal wiretapping, accepting bribes, abuse of power, aiding individual government officials in embezzling funds on an especially large scale and laundering them. And he himself, the deputies believed, during the years of his reign had become far from a poor man. For example, he allegedly owns a yacht worth £3 million. After the 2004 elections, there were statements that history would give a fair assessment of President Kuchma, different from today's rumors. But it would be worth trying today to figure out what kind of person this is and how he came to his current result.
