England, 17th century. The time of Oliver Cromwell's protectorate. After an unsuccessful attempt to regain the throne, King Charles II Stuart becomes an outcast in his own country. Having disguised himself and changed his name, he, accompanied by only one loyal supporter, young Julian Grantham, tries to escape to the continent. By chance finding himself in a church where a fanatical priest has driven his flock into a frenzy, Charles and Lord Julian prevent the crowd from tearing apart the two daughters of Baron Robsart. In gratitude, the young ladies invite their saviors to St. Priory Castle.
