“I can’t stand the theatre... a primitive and rotten form of art that reeks of Stone Age rituals and all sorts of communal nonsense...” stated one of Nabokov’s crafty characters. And Nabokov himself in his mature years, having a very diverse experience as a screenwriter and playwright, whose plays were staged in Europe and America, did not like modern theater as he knew it either. Moreover, he placed dramaturgy lower than other types of art, making an exception for only a few masterpieces in all world literature. At the same time, Nabokov, apparently, never abandoned the idea of creating a play in which “action and poetry” would be combined in perfect harmony, a play in which the “unique pattern of life” and that special “logic of dreams” that makes up the sign would be reflected genuine art. The publication presents the main collection of dramatic works by Vladimir Nabokov, written in 1921–1942.
