The Wanderings and Travels of Pero Tafura (1453–1454), along with the Embassy to Tamerlane (1403–1406), which is traditionally considered to have been authored by Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo, is one of the two famous Castilian travel books. This is not a diary, but an autobiography with elements of a chivalric romance, built around the wanderings that the young hidalgo Pero Tafur (c. 1410 - c. 1480) made in 1436–1439. on their own initiative. The traveler combines sincere faith and a keen sense of class pride with tireless curiosity, sometimes curiosity bordering on adventurism. The most valuable information contains descriptions of Rome and Venice, Constantinople, Trebizond and Crimea, Cyprus, Palestine and Egypt, as well as German lands. The book mentions several hundred historical figures and provides vivid descriptions of famous people and events. The combination of anecdotes and reflections, testimonies and legends, sweeping views and delightful details makes this 15th-century encyclopedia also a remarkable literary monument.
