In 1613, Miguel Cervantes published the moralizing “Novel about the Conversation of Dogs.” Two hundred years later, one of the interlocutors, Berganza's dog, entered into a conversation with the hero of Hoffmann's short story, talked about the atrocities of Spanish witches, his acquaintance with the bandmaster Johannes Kreisler, the love of the beautiful Cecilia, and communicated his opinion about modern art - although his reasoning sometimes smacks of a dog.
