There is a “Russian idea” of the West; even earlier, the “European idea” of Russia arose, formulated and embodied by Peter I. Mutual interest was based on the European dream of Russia and the Russian dream of Europe, translated into ideas and practical steps. It is enough to recall the translation project of Peter I, which accompanied his reforms, or the translation project of the West in the last decades of the 19th century, when the first translations of the great Russian novel into Western European languages turned Russia into a trendsetter in the field of culture. The history of Russian translated fiction is a brilliant confirmation of the mutual attraction of different cultures. V.
