On the outskirts of the Strand of Myrcea constellation, in the distant Perseid branch of the galaxy, there is the Purple Rose system, consisting of three stars - Lorca, Sing and Siren. The remarkable planet Cadwall revolves around Sirena, since time immemorial protected from colonization and exploitation by the charter of the earthly Society of Naturalists that discovered it, but which no longer exists. Cadwall's administrative headquarters is located on Araminta Station, where a young man named Glowen Clattock is trying to determine what career he can pursue in Cadwall's hierarchical, constrained society. Cadwall is a planet of extraordinary beauty. To protect it, the Naturalist Society established a Charter limiting the number of settlers - employees of the Reserve who enforce its laws.
