School teacher Edward Ellis (1840-1916) wrote about five hundred books under various pseudonyms. Among them are adventure novels (“ten-cent novels”), biographies, and textbooks. In the novel The Prairie Steam Man (1868), the protagonist creates a humanoid steam engine and travels through the Wild West. The novel gave birth to a special genre of fiction - the Edisonade, stories about fantastic inventions. The original text has entered the public domain. Here is the first translation into Russian.
