A young and modest housewife Mariah, living in the small town of Canaan in New Hampshire, suddenly discovers that her husband Colin is having an affair. This is already the second betrayal: a few years ago it all ended for Mariah with a suicide attempt, but this time she decided to divorce, despite a new attack of deep depression. The situation is complicated by the fact that Mariah and Colin’s seven-year-old daughter, Vera, begins to behave very strangely: first she got an imaginary friend who knows how to cure a child of AIDS and bring her grandmother back from the world of the dead, then the girl began to quote the Bible, which she had never read, and later Mariah was horrified to discover... stigmata on the child’s body. What is it: a sign from above or someone's stupid prank? Doctors are in shock, the media is everywhere trumpeting about the newly-minted messiah, religious supporters are divided into two camps: those who believe in the holiness of the girl, and those who consider her mother a charlatan.
