In the novel “Garden, Ashes” (1965), the Serbian writer Danilo Kis (1935–1989), in his characteristic lyrical manner, describes the collision of the fragile world of childhood (garden) with death (ashes). Thematically, it is the story of a family, told by a little boy, Andreas Sahm, the author's alter ego. War, pogroms, the yellow Star of David burst into the garden of childhood, and in the ovens of Auschwitz the father (ashes) disappears forever, leaving his son with mental pain and the memory of his unlived life.
