"Reflections on the Jewish Question" is an attempt to identify the mechanisms of hatred. Sartre defines racism here as the fear of responsibility for one's own life. Antisemitism is a “passion”: a prejudice that cannot be supported by facts. That is, “crookedness.” This rejection of a particular community is like some kind of anxiety that hides its name. The anti-Semite reveals his fear of delving into the hidden corners of his consciousness. Instead of “getting out of himself,” he, out of cowardice, prefers to hide in the trap of a welcoming and external reality for him.
