Yuk Hui is a Hong Kong philosopher, author of books and articles on the philosophy of technology, media theory and cybernetics. The title of this book contains two fundamental concepts that allow us to take a fresh look at the relationship between nature and technology, as well as freedom and necessity. Starting from German idealism and philosophy of nature and tracing the evolution of recursivity and contingency in organicism and organology of the 20th century, the author lays the foundations for a new type of philosophizing that corresponds to an era when environmental and algorithmic disasters are becoming part of everyday life, and the difference between a machine and an organism is a pure convention.
