The author of Mr. d'Artagnan's apocryphal memoirs is considered to be Gasien (sometimes written as Gatien) de Courtille de Sandra. In the preface he is referred to as Mr. de Courtlitz. His most famous book, undoubtedly, remains the Memoirs of Sir d'Artagnan, captain-lieutenant of the first company of the king's musketeers, containing many personal and secret things that happened during the reign of Louis the Great, which were first published in three volumes in Cologne in 1700 by the publishing house Pierre Marteau (pseudonym of Jean Elsevier), then a second edition in Amsterdam by the publisher Pierre Rouge in 1704 and were reprinted a third time in 1715 by Pierre du Camp.
