Gacien Courtille de Sandra (1644–1712) was a journalist and pamphleteer, a direct witness and participant in the most turbulent events of the second half of the 17th - early 18th centuries, the author of about forty books and one of the most read writers of his time. “Memoirs of M. L. C. D. R.” (“Memoirs of M. Comte de Rochefort”; “M. L. C. D. R.” means: “Monsieur le Comte de Rochefort”), are of undoubted interest today both from historical and literary points of view; Kurtil's heroes were immortalized in his famous trilogy by Alexandre Dumas the father. The pseudo-memoirs written by Kurtil are absolutely apocryphal in nature. The hero of “Memoirs of M. L. C. D. R.”, Count de Rochefort, resembles the author himself - a military man who lived the life of an honest servant, but was never able to make a court career.
