The heroes of Svetlana Petrova’s story are middle-aged people; their youth was spent under Soviet rule, which, as you know, taught to “dream about a wonderful future.” This is how they live, aged, life-beaten dreamers, dreaming of a better fate, naively trying to join the “ranks of the builders of a new life,” becoming unwitting victims of other people’s business plans and business wars. The cheerful pensioner Panyushkin, his wife Capitolina, exhausted by life, and the ex-beautiful secretary Zinka live in Khosta. Moscow intellectuals also come here - the retired pianist and pessimist Shaposhnikov, with whom Panyushkin plays chess, the dreamy wife of the musician Natalya Petrovna.
