French writer Georges Blond (1906–1989) is the author of the popular series of books about sea voyages and discoveries, The Great Mysteries of the Oceans (The Great Hour of the Oceans). The new, revised edition in Russian is published in two volumes and is equipped with extensive reference material, including maps, dictionaries of names, maritime terms and names of ships and aircraft. The second book includes stories about three exceptionally unique waters of the World Ocean. These are the Mediterranean Sea, the polar seas and the Caribbean, or Filibuster Sea. Due to its position, the Mediterranean, the cradle of many ancient civilizations, was in a certain sense the “center of the world” and more than once became the arena of stubborn confrontation, the outcome of which significantly influenced the destinies of all mankind. The history of the exploration of the Arctic Ocean and the seas surrounding Antarctica is closely connected with the search for new sea routes and daring attempts to reach the North and South Poles of the Earth, from nameless pioneers to the legendary scientific expeditions of the 20th century. Finally, the book presents a detailed and incredibly fascinating story about three centuries of pirate fishing in the Caribbean - the so-called Filibuster Sea.
