In The Natural History of Destruction, the great German writer W. G. Sebald explores the ability of culture to withstand historical catastrophe. The heroes of Sebald's essay are the philosopher Jean Amery, a concentration camp survivor, the writer Alfred Andersch, who managed to adapt to the Nazi regime, the writer and artist Peter Weiss, who devoted his work to violence and oblivion, and all German literature, which became a victim of British air raids during World War II no less than the German cities themselves and their inhabitants.
