In 1918, Vladimir Nabokov and his brothers and sisters posed for a photograph. It happened in Crimea, where the young Nabokovs fled from St. Petersburg. In this photo, they are still surrounded by an aura of wealth and nobility. Behind everyone stands a serious and handsome young man, dressed in black. His gaze is directed directly at the camera. This is not Vladimir at all. This is Sergei Nabokov, born only 11 months later than his brother. His fate turned out completely differently. Vladimir Nabokov became one of the most significant writers of the 20th century, gaining fame and achieving financial success. Sergei had neither fame nor success. The fact of his existence was almost hidden by his family and, first of all, by his famous brother. And yet, Sergei’s life was no less remarkable in its own way. His story is the story of a vulnerable young man who turns into a desperately brave man on the way to a tragic ending. While the successful writer Nabokov was captivating the American public and catching butterflies, the other Nabokov was doing everything possible to help his fellow sufferers in a concentration camp near Hamburg. But before that there was a dreamy childhood, a poor youth and friendship with amazing people - with Jean Cocteau and Gertrude Stein, Sergei Diaghilev and Pablo Picasso.
