Why do people get hooked on everything so easily? Modern man has many addictions. We sit on social networks, play computer games and gambling, spend much more on purchases than we intended, drink, smoke or play sports fanatically. But why then do psychiatrists and psychologists call only alcohol or drug addiction a disease? And, for example, not unrequited love, which is also an addiction with sad consequences? Our brains seek pleasure and relaxation in a world that does not reciprocate. The brain continuously restructures itself, learning and developing. Once we have some kind of addiction, this process accelerates sharply, because our brain is regularly offered very attractive “prizes”. Mark Lewis, a cognitive neuroscientist and former addict, combines simple stories of human life with clear scientific explanation. “The Biology of Desire” will give hope to anyone who either struggles with addiction themselves or helps others struggle.
