This is the Discworld - a world in itself and a mirror of all other worlds. An overturned saucer 10,000 miles in diameter, thirty miles thick at the Edge and considerably thicker in the center; a disk that rests on the backs of four elephants, which in turn stand on the back of a turtle, Great A'Tuin (or Great A'Tuin - cosmozoologists are not quite sure). A world governed by metaphor, faith, and “narrative causality.” A world where there is a place for everyone - gods and people, trolls and gnomes; a cowardly wizard who regularly saves the world; witches endowed with rock-solid confidence in their rightness; Death (male), who has developed empathy for humanity; and, of course, to the city of Ankh-Morpork, the great melting pot where the future is created. And what began as a parody of fantasy classics and cliches of the genre gradually develops into a human comedy - a collection of ironic and wise observations, a gallery of grotesque, sympathetic and complex characters.
