The relationship between the owner of the Segelfoss estate, Lieutenant Villatz Holmsen, and his wife, Mrs. Adelheide, is a relationship of love and mutual repulsion, a kind of love-enmity that distorts their lives and leads to a breakup, characteristic of many of Hamsunov’s characters.
