Knut Hamsun (real name Pedersen) was born on August 4, 1859, in northern Norway, in the town of Lom in Gudsbrandal, in the family of a rural tailor. In his youth he studied to be a shoemaker, and from the age of 14 he led a wandering life. Nobel Prize laureate (1920). He had exceptional popularity in Russia in the pre-revolutionary years. Long before collaborating with the Nazis (for which he was tried in Norway).
