The Metaphysics of Love is the most personal and most original work of Dietrich von Hildebrand (1889-1977). The phenomenological interpretation of philosophiaperennis (eternal philosophy), made by him in the treatise “What is Philosophy?”, is applied here to the analysis of love, eros and relations between the sexes. Considering various forms of natural love (children’s love for their parents, love for friends, neighbors, children, marital love, etc.), Hildebrand, following Plato, Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, builds an ordo amoris (hierarchy of love) from “agape” to “ caritas." Created over the course of 12 years, “The Metaphysics of Love” is a kind of “summa amoris”, analogies of which are difficult to find in modern philosophical literature. Translation from German was made according to the last lifetime edition of 1971. It is translated into Russian for the first time.
