Stendhal's “On Love” (1822) is the brightest treatise of the classic of French literature, which for the first time connected manifestations of love with the character of peoples and the characteristics of historical eras. Stendhal argued that love is not just a feeling, but a special work with its own character. Refusing any idealistic explanations of love, the writer connected it with the feeling of shame as a social feeling. Stendhal's observations on the origins of love became important for novelistic dramaturgy throughout the 19th century. In this edition, Stendhal's treatise is supplemented with a foreword by Alexander Markov, a professor at the Russian State University for the Humanities.
