"Long live ficus!" (1936) is a bitter, ironic novel, largely autobiographical. The main character is Gordon Comstock, an unrecognized poet, a failed writer, forced to work in an advertising agency to earn a living. He has a real talent for writing slogans, but his work disgusts him and seems like a caricature of literary creativity. He despises material values and the vulgarity of the everyday way of life, the symbol of which is the ficus tree on the window. He blames money for all his failures, but proud poverty only leads him into the depths of depression... Comstock needs to understand that in addition to high art, there are also simple joys, and there is nothing shameful in the desire to earn money. What will save him?

Роман "Хай живе фікус!" - це справжня перлина літератури, яка змушує задуматися про сенс життя, творчість і матеріальні цінності. Головний герой, Гордон Комсток, є яскравим прикладом людини, яка бореться з внутрішніми демонами та невизнанням. Його невдачі як поета та письменника відображають більшість творчих людей, які стикаються з реальністю, що не завжди співпадає з їхніми мріями. Автор майстерно передає іронію та гіркоту, які супроводжують Гордона в його пошуках сенсу. Фікус, що символізує звичайність і матеріалізм, стає метафорою для всього, чого він ненавидить, але водночас не може уникнути. Ця книга не лише про боротьбу з системою, але й про те, як важливо знайти баланс між мистецтвом і життям, між гідністю та необхідністю заробляти на життя. Я б рекомендував цю книгу всім, хто цінує глибокі роздуми про людську природу, творчість і справжні цінності.
