The author traces the history of village crafts over ten centuries - from the fall of the Roman Empire to the beginning of the development of capitalist relations. Using material from almost all countries of the continent, the history of the development of crafts in villages and estates, trade in handicraft items, the position of different layers of artisans and their gradual transformation into hired workers is shown.
