This edition presents Friedrich Gorenstein's novel "The Place" - a work of greatest scale and strength of talent, but for a long time undeservedly left without reader's attention, like other stories and novels by Gorenstein. A writer and screenwriter (“Solaris”, “Slave of Love”), whose work, without exaggeration, can be called one of the pinnacle phenomena in the prose of the twentieth century, Gorenshtein emigrated from the USSR in 1980, being the author of a single publication - the story “The House with a Turret” . At the same time, his friends, such as Andrei Tarkovsky, Andrei Konchalovsky, Yuri Trifonov, Vasily Aksenov, Fazil Iskander, Lazar Lazarev, Boris Khazanov and Benedikt Sarnov, were convinced of the writer’s genius, which was mentioned, in particular, by Andrei Tarkovsky in his diary. The modern sophisticated reader will not be surprised by the exciting twists of the plot and the drama of the events described (although this is also present in the novel), but the fusion of everyday life, ideology and psychology proposed by Gorenstein, Soviet history in its social and metaphysical aspects, the innermost experiences of the hero in combination with the horrors of the people's elements and wise reflections on human nature allow us to classify “The Place” as one of the best novels of Russian literature. Gorenstein's hero, a young man of the fifties, Gosha Tsvibyshev, is in many ways close to Dostoevsky's heroes - the "underground man", Arkady Dolgoruky from "The Teenager", Raskolnikov... Dreaming of a decent life, but not even having a bed in a hostel, Tsvibyshev tries to assert himself and rebel – and, it seems, after the 20th Congress and the rehabilitation of his deceased father, such an opportunity opens up for him...
