Friedrich Gorenstein became famous and gained a literary reputation in June 1964, when an issue of Yunost was published, in which the story “The House with a Turret” was published. The arrival of a new artist changes this world at least a little, helps a person become more natural, that is, more free, which, alas, does not always mean happier. It would seem that the serious and unconditional success of the initial publication presupposed subsequent ones, but this did not happen. The circumstances of life at that time stood like a blank wall between the writer and the readers and forced him to ultimately leave our country. However, until the mid-70s, his name could occasionally be found on the 16th page of Literary Newspaper in the “12 Chairs Club”; I remember a story about a man who felt guilty when he was insulted and beaten. It is precisely the feeling of guilt, not only the artistic gift, that connects F. Gorenstein with the asceticism of his predecessors in literature, with the great and sad tradition of Russian truth-seeking. This was confirmed starting in the late eighties, when the writer’s name returned to us, and each item he returned occupied a strong place in the spotlight of public attention. One need only mention the novel “Atonement,” published in our magazine, the essay “My Chekhov,” the drama “The Dispute about Dostoevsky,” the novels “Psalm” and “Bed Place.” And further. It would be unfair not to talk about F. Gorenstein’s “presence” in cinema, not very long, but significant - he wrote, together with Andrei Tarkovsky, the script for the film “Solaris”, together with Andron Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky - the scripts for “Slaves of Love” and “The Seventh bullets." Anticipating a new meeting between Yunost readers and Friedrich Gorenstein, it is worth remembering and leafing through ten magazine pages of that same, already long-standing, debut story - they are about a boy whose mother died on the road. Grief, cold indifference, anger, human selflessness, and kindness came together in his heart; everything that life does not allow you to miss. And you can’t stop the train or pick up other companions. It is impossible to change fate, which is not in vain testing our courage and dignity. We have a long road ahead and a separation that will unite everyone.N. Zlotnikov
