This collection contains the works of Friedrich Gorenstein, published in the period from 1996 to 2002 in the Berlin cultural and political magazine “Mirror of Riddles.” “For “Mirror of Riddles” it was important to get Friedrich Gorenstein as an author, according to in essence, a living classic. The writer was impressed not only by the general nonconformist attitude of the editors of the Mirror of Riddles. Frankly, I also liked the “pleasant company” on the pages of the magazine and especially Efim Etkind. The proximity of Joseph Brodsky, Boris Khazanov, director of the Hermitage Piotrovsky, Lev Anninsky and many others was also suitable. Our editors remembered the wise journalistic experience of the editor of Sovremennik, Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov, to take into account the wishes of the “main” authors. For Nekrasov, these were Turgenev and Tolstoy, who, unfortunately, still did not get along with each other, and it was necessary to find a special approach to each. For us, such a “main” author was Friedrich Gorenstein, and we did not publish authors who personally offended him, especially since we sympathized and empathized with him in these “offenses”, which they write about with irony” (Mina Polyanskaya). “In Berlin, despite the fact that in the German press the title of “the second Dostoevsky” was assigned to him, the writer had many failures and disappointments, in particular in connection with his political views, which did not fit into ready-made schemes so much that the press got tired of writing him down right, then to the left radicals. The Berlin magazine "Mirror of Mysteries" was in recent years almost the only press organ where he could openly act as a publicist" (Igor Polyansky). The works are arranged in chronological order, as they appear on the pages of the magazine "Mirror of Mysteries". Introductory article by Mina Polyanskaya published by: Polyanskaya M.
