The text of Valery Soifer’s memoirs printed below is a direct continuation of the memoir essay “The Company, or How They Survived Me from the USSR” (see “Continent” No. 102), which told about how the author, an outstanding Soviet scientist, one of the leading specialists in the field of molecular biology, a prominent human rights activist and friend of A.D. Sakharov was deprived of the opportunity to work in his specialty at the end of the 70s, and after eight years of being in “refusal”, he was forced to emigrate to the USA in 1988. The memoir essay “In America” tells about the first two years of the author’s life in the USA, when he worked at the University of Ojai (Columbus).
