The author, professor, director of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics at George Mason University in the USA, is familiar to Russian readers from many books on molecular genetics, history and sociology of science. His fundamental work “Power and Science - The History of the Defeat of Genetics in the USSR” was published in Russian and English in the USA (in 1989 and 1994, respectively) and Russia (1993) In a new study devoted to political dictatorship in Soviet science and the harmful consequences of intervention Bolshevik Party into scientific activity, the author analyzes pseudo-discoveries in the USSR and considers the role of the individual and the behavior of scientists in conditions of unfreedom. The phenomenon of Lysenkoism in biology during the Soviet period and psychological phenomena associated with the dictatorship of the party in scientific life are also analyzed. The reader learns about “outstanding” fighters against genetics and cell theory, their anecdotal discoveries, such as the generation of cells from cell-free matter, the transformation of cells into viruses and vice versa, the formation of human bones from worms and other mystical pseudo-discoveries. Despite the seriousness of the author's approach, the book is written in a fascinating, ironic manner and is intended for a wide range of readers. Second edition, revised and expanded.
