Vyacheslav Aleksandrovich Kalikinsky (born October 26, 1951) is a journalist and prose writer, author of historical novels, member of the Russian Writers' Union. The action of the spy novel “The Ambassador: The Torn Island” is based on real events of the 1870s associated with the development of Russian-Japanese relations. Sakhalin Island becomes a stumbling block on this path. According to the Shimoda Treaty of 1855, the first diplomatic agreement between Russia and Japan, it was recognized as their joint, indivisible possession. But the active settlement of the island, first by Russians and then by Japanese, aggravates the situation, and to resolve the contradictions that have arisen, Enomoto Takeaki was sent to the Russian capital as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, who received, along with a diplomatic rank, a new military rank - vice admiral of the Japanese Imperial Navy. The figure of the ambassador, a samurai, a brilliantly educated officer who miraculously survived disgrace for rebellion against the emperor, attracts the close attention of the Russian foreign policy department and becomes the subject of a large political game in which opponents of the current emperor of Japan pursue their interests. Enomoto, going to St. Petersburg, does not even suspect that he is in mortal danger. He finds an unexpected friend and assistant in the person of a young Russian officer, Mikhail Berg. Will he be able to save the Japanese ambassador? You will learn about this by reading the novel.
