Louis-Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877) - politician, prime minister during the July Monarchy, first president of the Third Republic, historian, writer - the history of France has been associated with this name for half a century. Author of fundamental studies “History of the French Revolution” and “History of the Consulate and Empire”. These studies are unique sources, as they were written “hot on the heels” and are based on original archival materials to which Thiers had access due to his high government positions. Both works provide a very detailed history of the French Revolution and the era of Napoleon I to the present day quoted by both Russian and European historians. It is all the more surprising that “The History of the Consulate and the Empire” has never been published in its entirety in Russia. Some excerpts from it were published in 1845 in “Notes of the Fatherland”, and in 1846-1849 only the first four volumes of this twenty-volume work were published - “The Consulate”, which is what you are holding in your hands. The second part, "Empire", is now being translated by Olga Weiner and will be published in Zakharov in 2013 - a century and a half after its publication in France.
