Fiery silhouettes float in the hot haze. Burnt marks remain in the fields. A former military surgeon settles with his wife and children in the peaceful region of Adygea. Alarming rumors about mysterious creatures wandering around the area are of little concern to the doctor, but the disappearance of his daughter forces him to chase the mysterious silhouettes. In the search for the child, the doctor is helped by a detachment of random volunteers: Azim, a local librarian, his grandson Dan, and Gulshan, a doctor at a local hospital. They soon discover that the doctor's daughter is not the only missing child. Pursuing the burning figures, the search party crosses mountain rivers, descends into the depths of ancient burial mounds and faces the formidable forces behind the appearance of the noondays.
