The third and fourth volumes of “The Complete Works of the Holy Fathers of the Church and Church Writers” are dedicated to the theological heritage of St. Basil the Great, Archbishop of Caesarea of Cappadocia (330–379), and his contemporary and associate St. Amphilochius, Bishop of Iconium (340–394). The Church adopted the title “Great” for Saint Basil both for his highly ascetic life, crowned with holiness, and for his most active church teaching activity. Together with Saint Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 295–373), the godly Basil had a decisive influence in the final victory over the Arian heresy (the Caesarea saint only lived two years before achieving this victory at the Second Ecumenical Council in 381). His works make a special contribution to the treasury of Church Tradition, representing the best examples of patristic theology. The first volume of the Works of St. Basil the Great contains dogmatic-polemical, exegetical works, as well as Conversations: the famous treatises “Against Eunomius” and “On the Holy Spirit”, “Conversations” on Shestodnev" and other works translated into Russian in the 19th century. In his dogmatic and polemical works, Saint Basil appears as a great theologian of the Church and defender of Orthodoxy against the Arian heresy, in exegetical writings - as a brilliant expert on the Holy Scriptures and its excellent interpreter, in Conversations - as a talented preacher who controlled the hearts and minds of his listeners. In addition, , this volume includes some of the “Conversations on Psalms” translated into Russian for the first time, as well as “Conversations on the Creation of Man”, almost unknown to the domestic reader. The publication is preceded by a foreword by Metropolitan Vladimir of Tashkent and Central Asia and an introductory article by a professor at the Moscow Theological Academy, Doctor of Church History A. I. Sidorov about the life, work, theological and literary heritage of St. Basil the Great. The Appendix contains the well-known analytical work of Archbishop Vasily (Krivoshein) on the polemics of St. Basil against Eunomius. The volume ends with an index of quotations from the Holy Scriptures. The editors hope that this publication will attract the attention of teachers and students of religious educational institutions and simply thoughtful Orthodox readers who revere the patristic heritage.
