The fifth volume of the series “The Complete Collection of the Works of the Holy Fathers of the Church and Church Writers in Russian Translation” is dedicated to the ascetic heritage of St. Theodore the Studite (759–826). This volume contains the Works of the moral and ascetic teacher. Theodore and includes a cycle of preaching works of this holy father for monastics called “The Great Annunciation” (parts I–III). Rev. Theodore is called the holy father, who did a lot for Byzantine monasticism, returning it to the path of communal dispensation in the 9th century; a prolific church writer, a talented and tireless preacher, a brilliant hymnographer, a stern ascetic, a confessor who suffered a lot from the Byzantine emperors for his Orthodox church-canonical and dogmatic views; the renovator of the capital's Studite monastery, as well as the organizer of several monasteries and their spiritual and administrative leader. Thanks to the bright and accessible content, the catechetical teachings of St. Theodore the Studite were very popular in Byzantium, read in medieval Rus', and also remain relevant to this day, and especially for monastics. This edition opens with a preface by Metropolitan Vladimir of Tashkent and Central Asia. "The Great Announcement" Rev. Theodore is preceded by an introductory article by the famous Russian Byzantine scholar, professor, doctor of church history I. I. Sokolov, “Reverend Theodore the Studite, his church-social and theological-literary activities. Historical sketch”, as well as two ancient Lives of St. Theodore, supplemented by data from the third Life. Texts of the works of the Rev. Theodore the Studite are accompanied by theological, church-historical and textual commentaries. At the end of the book there is an index of quotations from the Holy Scriptures, as well as name, geographical and subject indexes. The editors hope that this publication will attract the attention of teachers and students of theological educational institutions and simply thoughtful Orthodox readers who are not indifferent to the patristic heritage and its integral component - the ascetic heritage of St. Theodore the Studite.
