Having begun his literary career as a writer of the “natural school,” Turgenev, in the story “The Calm,” continued the fight against false romanticism, cultivating in readers the ability to see truly beautiful things in the reality surrounding them. That is why Turgenev’s story aroused resistance among fans of “sublime” literature. The multifaceted composition of the story, which made it possible to trace the fates of heroes from different strata of Russian society, the interweaving of the lyrical-psychological and ironic manner of narration - all this created the artistic prerequisites for the appearance of Turgenev’s novels.
