In the nineteenth century, I. S. Turgenev showed that not only the “quick-witted Newtons” could be produced by Russian soil, but also its own Hamlets, Fausts and Lear kings. “Eternal images were transferred to Russian soil, changed names, became an instrument of objective research of Russian life and a way of lyrical self-expression, nevertheless maintaining a deep, archetypal connection with the soil and cultural tradition that gave birth to them" (I. N. Sukhikh).
