The artist Alexander Nikolaevich Volkov-Muromtsev (St. Petersburg, 1844 - Venice, 1928), who received an education as an agronomist and a professorship in Odessa, left his career as a scientist in his homeland and went to Italy, where he became famous as an excellent watercolorist, author, first turn, Venetian landscapes. On the wave of European success, he acquired a palace in Venice on the Grand Canal, which received his name - Palazzo Volkoff, in which he lived for half a century. His aristocratic origins and talents allowed him to enter the cosmopolitan Venetian elite; he was close to Wagner and Liszt; as a guide he received members of the House of Romanov. For many years he had a secret romantic relationship with the actress Eleonora Duse. His memoirs were published after his death, translated into English, but the original manuscript was lost and the reader is now offered a reverse translation.
