This book contains almost everything that is known about the Grand Duke of Kiev Vladimir Vsevolodovich Monomakh - about how his contemporaries imagined him and how his immediate descendants assessed him. A statesman, military leader, and talented writer, he stopped the princely feuds and, having collected a significant part of the Russian lands in the hands of his family, acted as a unifier of Rus'. This was partly the reason why the name of Vladimir Monomakh became the cornerstone of the idea of “transferring the empire” to Rus', and he himself became part of a political myth, the formation of which began during his lifetime on the pages of the oldest Russian chronicle - “The Tale of Bygone Years”, compiled in 1116 - and continued in the XIII - XVI centuries. Historian Dmitry Borovkov, taking a critical approach to the information contained in the chronicles, made an attempt to identify the motives that influenced the creation of the chronicle image of Vladimir Monomakh, and thereby recreate his true appearance.
